Renal Biopsy on 20090814

Alright, bout time I update this thing. I had to undergo the renal biopsy ( Kidney Biopsy ) due to the fact that my kidney is not getting better even with high dose of strong medicines. The date was set for 14th Aug. I was to be admitted on th 13th but since I was working the bed was booked for me and I can just report there after I report off work at 4am.

So I went there and was instructed to go through A&E who then wheelchaired me to the ward after my feeble protest that I can walk there WHICH could get me there faster than the poor old porter can push me. Got my bed and time for me to get some rest which I couldnt cause the nurse had to ask me some necessary questions. After that I tried to sleep again which I couldnt again because the same nurse came and had to put the dreaded plug into me which I asked if it is necessary coz I hate those things. It constantly hurt and really limit my wrist movements. Later on the male nurse came to take my temperature and blood pressure. By then it was 7.30am so I thought might as well not sleep since I still havent got my cool hospital uniform. Oh, I didnt eat since 10pm the previous night coz I wasnt allowed to.

At around 8 plus my doctor and some of his colleague came to look at me and ask doctor-ly questions. I was so used to their way of speech that I managed to pick up some of their terms they use. Once they are satisfied, they left. I was told that my biopsy was to be done at 10am but at 9.20am the Staff Nurse came and said it's time. I was like WHAT, I didnt even get a chance to wander around the ward. So they transfered me to this thing and pushed me to the room which wasnt far. Once I reached there, I was suddenly nervous which was strange coz I wasnt nervous 2 years back when I had done it before. There are about 5 people in the room. Which made me even more nervous. There was an ultrasound machine for them to find my kidney. A young doctor was going to do the biopsy. There was also a student doctor or some sort as my original doctor was explaining things to him. He was like saying during such procedures there will be a time out which the doctor will ask me what am I here for.

The doctor then applied some gel and start looking for my kidney. He kept asking me to breath in and out. Somehow it made it easier for him to find my kidney. I was starting to get nervous. He then said he found it and gonna numb my skin. He gave me an injection which HURT A LOT. I'll rate it 8.5/10. It feels like getting stab or something. He asked me if it still hurt if he inject the needle which does and gave another numbing shot. Ugh!! He then inject the needle and use some sort of gunlike equipment to get the sample. Which also hurt. About 6/10. I thought I was done because the process of guiding the needle to the kidney was very uncomfortable and the position which I had to lie on my stomach was really awkward and my right arm was starting to get numb from the position BUT NO...he was quite done yet and went for another shot of the kidney. Again, I thought I was done but no, this time an experienced doctor was going for it and he did it much faster than the previous one but his one HURT LIKE HELL because I actually flinched uncontrollably. During the procedure I was thinking, what did I got myself into? Finally, it was finished and I was pushed back to my ward. My kidney was damn sore by then like my back was punched repeatedly. I find it that this time it took way longer and hurt much more. Funny though was they really want me to do it that week coz they had this exclusive machine for the week. The previous time was done by one doctor and it was done much faster with lesser pain. However the extra sample was sent for medical study/research which I dont mind. Whatever to help people eh? I want them to at least find something to cure this shit. Maybe not now but later in the years to come or so. I dont want young people to have my condition.

Back in the ward,my mom already came to the ward. I was so tired and hurting that I wanna sleep but couldnt. I drift in and out of sleep till my friends came. They bought for me a copy of FHM, their idea of a joke. Which was cool. Something to read in the night. Thanks guys. I really appreciate it you guys came to visit. They left at around 5. My parents left at around 8.30pm. My back still hurt after the necessary 6 hours lie down and not much movement. I couldnt even walk to the toilet. My brother came to visit soon after. He read the FHM before I did. He left in an hour or so to fecth the wife. At around 10pm I finally get to sleep but AGAIN I was bloody awaken by the male nurse at around 12am. He mentioned I was snoring. Was I wrong to snore? I didnt get to sleep peacefully since my night shift. Geez. Finally after that I slept till 8am. Ate my breakfast of tasteless mee siam. Swallowed my entire 7 pills of medicine. The experienced doctor came to say that I could go home in few hours and also told me he didnt have the full results of the biopsy but the partial results is not good as he said that part of my kidney has irreversible damage. I kinda guessed it but having it confirmed professionally FUCKING SUCKS.

I went back to sleep and only woke up when my mom and brother arrived at 10.30am. The staff nurse then came and say I can go home. I showered, change and left. Guess that was it for this entry. Oh, I was given 6 days MC and 9 days light duty after my MC ends.
